Stained glass and fused glass: what is the difference?

Stained glass and fused glass both turn coloured glass into works of art, but they are made in very different ways.

Stained glass (vitrail)

In stained glass, pieces of coloured glass are cut and assembled side by side to form a design, like a mosaic of light. It is traditionally used in windows, doors, ceilings and decorative panels, where light passes through the colours.

Fused glass

In fused glass, pieces of glass are layered and melted together in a kiln until they become one piece. The result has depth, texture and flowing colour, and suits plates, bowls, centerpieces, wall art and gifts.

Which one for your project?

  • For a window, door or ceiling that lets light through a design: stained glass.
  • For a decorative or functional object, a centerpiece or a gift: fused glass.
